ça c'est le what

I’ve been really glad to be here the last week. I feel confident about getting around on my own and I’m enjoying the web-design work I’ve been doing. I’m not taking Larium any longer which also helps.

I’m at work for usually ~11hours a day, but 2 of those are time for a sieste (lunch/nap time). It takes 30 mins to get home in the middle of the day so that’s usually not worth it. So I’ve started to set daily goals and take little adventures during that time. Monday I hopped in a taxi and headed to the police station to make a police-certified copy of my passport. After asking a couple people and being led around the premises by a very helpful police officer, I completed all the steps necessary to get this done. Afterward I called my host brother and we ate a delicious pizza before taking mototaxis back to work. Tuesday I went in search of bread and avocados for lunch. A couple moto taxis and hours later I made it back to the office with three avocados and a couple baguette-like rolls. The avocados here are amazing, and huge, and ~$0.25.

I stick out when I am trekking around town which is a little hard for someone who (most of the time) does not feel at home in the spotlight. To give you an idea of how much I stick out here, I’ve only talked to one white person since I’ve been here. It’s an awesome/different experience. Here’s a few things said about me/to me when I’ve been on the road

  • ça c’est le what (‘what’ was supposed to be ‘white’ i’m sure.. ‘that’s the white’)
  • Quand tu es avec le blanc tu condues freestyle (said to my host brother while he was driving: ‘while you’re with the white you drive freestyle’)
  • Monsieur blanc (a bunch of times for various reasons, like ‘Bon apetit monsieur blanc’ when I was eating a sandwich)
  • Vampire (!?)

It has felt harmless so far; I haven’t felt threatened by things people say on the street.

Please pray that I could have some meaningful conversations with people about Jesus. I’ve gotten to pray for a few people which has been really good though I’m not practiced yet in talking about Jesus in French. Also pray for my French skills.

I posted some new photos in the same Picasa Web album. The new ones I’ve posted since my last post start at the DVD of Barack Obama. Again here’s that link:
